Luis Suárez, with extensive experience in humanitarian work, inaugurated this new chapter in Miami of the International Lions Club.
Miami Ambassadors Lions Club celebrated the official opening of its club on June 3, which was approved on February 22 of this year by Lions Clubs International. This is the first Lions club to open in District 35N in approximately 4 years. Luis Suarez inaugurated this new chapter of the International Lions Club as Founding President.
The partners were admitted by Governor James Campbell of District 35N and the officers were installed by the President of the Council of Multiple District 35, Diana Castillo. Jorge C. Colona, president of the Aventura-North Miami Beach Lions Club, and Adita Vázquez, Past District Governor (PDG ), provided guidance and direction to new President Luis Suárez and his cabinet.
Since February they had been meeting with them and their members to prepare for their responsibilities as officers and members serving their community.
Colona served as master of ceremonies and the club gave them their new banner of this organization. For his part, the president of the Peruvian Club of Miami, Gilberto Mantilla, presented them with the club’s bell. The hammer and the block were provided by Adita Vázquez, to President Luis Suárez as a symbol of his position. All members received membership pins and gifts from Lions International.
The board of directors of the Miami Ambassadors Lions Club is constituted by Ambassador Dr. Luis Suárez, as President and Founder; North Miami Beach Mayor Anthony DeFillipo as First Vice President; Dayamy Rodríguez in the position of Second Vice President and Coordinator of Services; Gina Romero as Secretary and Treasurer; and Nancy Garay as Director of Membership.
The Club is also honored to have as a member Eduardo Umaña, Consul General of El Salvador; Henry Cobos, Mayor of San Cristóbal (Galapagos Islands); the lawyer Miguel Aragundi Piedra, among others.
More than 100 years of humanitarian work
Lions Clubs is a global service organization with more than 46,000 clubs and 1.5 million active members in 206 countries and geographic areas. The organization claims to aim to meet the needs of the community both locally and globally. The ‘lions’ work under the slogan: “where there is a need there is a lion”.
As the Lions Clubs International website reads, “In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old business leader from Chicago, told the members of his business club that they should go beyond business matters and devote themselves to improving their communities and the world as a whole. The group Jones served in, the Chicago Business Circle, agreed.”
After contacting other groups in various areas of the United States, a meeting with a view to organizing the club took place on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois. “The new group adopted the name of one of the invited groups, the ‘Association of Lions Clubs, and in October of that year, a national convention was held in Dallas, Texas, United States. At this convention the bylaws were approved, the regulations, the objectives and the ethical principles of the organization”, adds the portal.
The objective of the club is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world; promote the principles of good governance and good citizenship; actively participate in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community; and unite clubs in bonds of friendship, good fellowship, and mutual understanding.
