Prof. Dr. Miguel Ángel Iglesias Blanco is a health professional and military officer who has served in different bodies and security forces in the Kingdom of Spain.

Prof. Iglesias is a proud Asturian from Mieres. He realized various health sciences studies such as the Diploma in Nursing at the University of Oviedo, the Diploma in Business Nursing at the National School of Occupational Medicine, and later graduated in Nursing from the University of Leon.

As a Specialist Nurse in Occupational Nursing by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, he completed the Master in Health Care, Management and Care, Management Specialty at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

As the culmination of his university academic career, he obtained a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Santiago de Compostela with an outstanding grade cum laude and a proposal for an extraordinary prize.

In 2017 he was invested as Honorable Corresponding Academician of the Andalusian Academy of Criminology (Spain).

Regarding his military training, he became a professional military through Air Force Employment, with a Health specialty, and later in the Civil Guard, where he currently holds Captain’s rank. He is also part of the National Police Corps as a sanitary technician.

He has participated in service commissions in the Oceanic Vessels of the Civil Guard since 2013 as head of the Medical Service, where he has practiced thousands of rescues and assistance.

For his impeccable service record, he has been decorated with the distinctive white Cross of the Order of Merit of the Civil Guard Corps, awarded by the His Excellency the Director-General of the Civil Guard: “having demonstrated relevant qualities of extraordinary merit”; the Official Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, awarded in the name of His Majesty the King of Spain; the Military Merit Cross with a white badge, awarded by the Minister of Defense, in consideration of the merits and circumstances that occurred; the Cross with the white distinctive of the Order of Merit of the Civil Guard Corps, for a mission in the Oceanic Vessels of the Civil Guard, “Operation Triton.”

He has also been awarded the National Nursing Award: “Nursing in Development Award 2018 correspondent category” for his humanitarian research with migrants.

Within the academic field, he has served as a professor and lecturer at ISED (Higher Institute of Studies), University of Santiago de Compostela, or ESFOREM (body authorized by the Ministry of Health), among other bodies.

He has also trained various generations of NATO officers in emergencies and is an instructor accredited by the National CPR Plan in Spain.

Besides, he stood out as a researcher authorized by the National Police in the “Lennart Levi Stress and Neuroimmunology Laboratory” of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He was an honorary collaborating professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Oviedo by the Department of Preventive and Public Health.

He has given more than 50 lectures and communications at international conferences, especially in human rights, emergencies and catastrophes: initiating a line of research in the rescue of migrants at sea. He is the author of more than 30 publications of diverse academic nature and is a member of various professional and scientific societies.
