The Organization of American States (OAS) is a Pan-American international organization, created on April 30, 1948, to serve as a political forum for decision-making, multilateral dialogue, and the integration of the Americas. According to its mission, the OAS works to strengthen peace and security, consolidate democracy, promote human rights, support social and economic development, and foster sustainable growth across the Americas. Through its actions, it seeks to build stronger relations between the nations and people of the continent.
The OAS is one of the oldest regional organizations. The First International Pan-American Conference, held in Washington in 1890, established the International Union of American Republics and its permanent secretariat, the Commercial Office of the American Republics, which was the precursor to the OAS. In 1910, this organization evolved into the Pan American Union.
The OAS is headquartered at the Casa de las Américas in Washington, DC, and also maintains regional offices across its member states. The organization comprises 34 member countries.
According to the OAS Charter (Title VIII), the main consultative and policy-making bodies include:
• General Assembly
• Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs
• Councils (Permanent Council of the OAS, Inter-American Council for Integral Development, and others)
• Inter-American Juridical Committee
• Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
• General Secretariat
• Specialized Conferences
• Specialized Agencies
